SUMC to Host Three Lenten Book Studies

Stockton United Methodist Church will offer two book study opportunities this Lenten season.

Starting at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, you are invited to gather at the table with Jesus and his disciples in the Lenten study “The Last Supper: Conversations That Led to the Cross” by Will Willimon.

The Upper Room class will read and discuss the stories and parables that Jesus told at tables

along the way to his final meal. The study is from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. Sundays in room 213 during Lent with leader Mitch Ross. Join us to “discover how Jesus used meals to reveal the surprising nature of God’s kingdom.”The last Sunday of Lent this year will be Sunday, March 29, which is Palm Sunday.

Willimon, the author of the study and a lifelong Methodist, is the professor of the Practice of

Christian Ministry at Duke University Divinity School and retired bishop of the North Alabama

Conference of The United Methodist Church.

Another Lenten study, this one examining the book "The Praise and Power of Easter" by Christine Caine and Lisa Harper, will meet Wednesday evenings from 5:40 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, through Wednesday, March 18, in Room 203 at the church. Led by Deb Campbell, this class will take in the details of Jesus' life, the agony of His death, and the overwhelming joy of His resurrection. A third study will be offered Thursday mornings from 10-11 a.m., Feb. 26-March 19. The study, led by Pastor Daniel Na, will explore “Knowing Who We Are: The Wesleyan Way of Grace” by Laceye C. Warner. This study will also be in Room 203. Sign-up is available in the Narthex.

Both studies are open to the public. For more information, contact Stockton United Methodist Church at (417) 276-4717. The church is located at 708 East Street.
